ANALYSIS OF A POPULATION PYRAMID
A population pyramid is a traditional way of visualizing and explaining the age structure of a society. It is a graph that shows the structure of a society by sex and age at a given time and place
The pyramid we are analyzing shows the demographic structure of Afghanistan in 2012
Observing the sex ratio we can say that there are more boys born than girls. Also we can see that the sex ratio matches at the age between 45 and 49 years old.
When we look at the pyramid it is clear that women have a higher life expectancy because of many reasons. Firstly, the men look less himselfs than women.Women are, in general, more preocupated about their selfs than men. Secondly, women tend to have healthier habits; they smoke and drink less, take fewer drugs, driving less aggressively and use less violence than men. There are also genetic reasons (testosterone) and there are also not very reliable reasons such as the evolutionary theory proposed by the Darwin´s disciples that says that nature gives women 'bonus points' for the simple reason that they are the ones who must ensure the survival of the species.
With regard to the age structure of the pyramid we can say that women have a higher life expectancy than men.
The shape of the pyramid shows that Afghanistan is in the first stage and that means that this countrie is a LEDC (Less Economy Developed Countrie)
In addition, the structure of the pyramid exhibit high birth rates and also high and very soon death rates.
The age group with a larger number of people is the group between 0 and 4 years old so that means that birth rates are very high in this country.
There are some irregularities in the profile of the pyramid due to some ages of social and economic inestability because of the war that was going in Afghanistan since 2001
The 10-14 interval shows a bump due to a post war baby boom in this country
There is a notch in the 2001 generation because is the generation in which war started
Finally the consequences of the demographic structure of the pyramid is, specially, the high death rates. Afghanistan goverment could investigate more with medicines, they could try to make of their country a safer place to live and they could make investments in health care such as building more hospitals.
According to the data shown , we can predict that the demographic evolution of Afghanistan will be from the stage in wich this country is (STAGE 1) to the STAGE 2. This transition will cause death rates fall so more people living in the middle age, and a slightly longer life expectancy. This transition will be only be possible if Afghanistan carry on solution to their biggest problem: the high death rates due to social instability
