ANALYSING AN URBAN PLAN

Salamanca is located in the northwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Northern Plateau. The province in which Salamanca is located shares his north border with Zamora, the west border with Portugal, the east border with Avila and at the south, this city borders with Cáceres. It is at 800 meters above the level of the sea. The river Tormes goes through the city and divides it into 2 different parts: the north part, which is the most populated one and the part in which the old city is located; and the south part, which is the less populated zone and the one which contains the industrial area of the city.

The city plan is clearly irregular, especially in the old part. This part of the city contains the most visited places of the city and is clearly dilimited by the N-630 Road. Here are located lots of old buildings and sights, mainly with a religious motif, like the San Marcos church or the Cathedral. In this part of the city is also located the famous main square of the city. Here the houses are old, the streets are narrow and the distribution of the buildings is irregular.


Out of the old part of Salamanca, there are different sections: residential areas and idustrial/recreative zones.
Residential areas are surrounding the old historic centre. In this area we can see that the streets and buildings are well distributed. There are lots of public buildings. In this part of the city are located almost all the sportscenters, supermarkets, banks...
